Best Resorts on Lake Vermilion Minnesota: White Eagle Resort Review

When you hear the word “resort”, Minnesota may not be the first destination that comes to your mind. But dreamy lakeside cabin resorts like White Eagle Resort on Lake Vermilion will change your mind.

This second generation family-owned cabin resort is tucked away on a secluded bay on the western half of Lake Vermilion. With 16 different cabins to choose from, including one on an island, there is truly something for everyone who wants a taste of the Minnesota Northwoods.

White Eagle Resort is much more than a Lake Vermilion cabin rental though, it’s an experience. It’s what has earned them a 5-star rating on Google and customers that come year after year with their families.

Here’s my honest review of White Eagle Resort, one of the best resorts on Lake Vermilion in Minnesota.

Where is Lake Vermilion Minnesota?

Lake Vermilion is located 225 miles north of Minneapolis or about 90 miles north of Duluth in Minnesota. It’s a massive lake at over 40,000 acres and 290 miles of shoreline.

Lake Vermilion is located north of Duluth in Minnesota.

On the eastern end of the lake, there is access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) through the Trout Lake portage near Tower and Ely. On the western end of the lake, follow along the Vermilion River north for about an hour to access the southern portion of Voyageurs National Park at Crane Lake.

White Eagle Resort is located on the western end of Lake Vermilion near the town of Cook.

Why is White Eagle Resort a great place to stay?

Fire burns in a private outdoor fire pit in front of a log cabin on Lake Vermilion.
White Eagle Resort’s cabins have private outdoor fire pits and decks with views of Lake Vermilion.

Just a short drive from the town of Cook, White Eagle Resort is tucked along a slice of the Lake Vermilion shoreline. It’s been in operation for over 100 years!

Lake Vermilion is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, particularly fishing and water-based activities. Northern pike, walleye, bluegill, crappie, perch, smallmouth bass, and muskie are just some of the species that draw anglers to the lake.

White Eagle Resort is second generation family-owned and operated. The owners, Tom and Steph Lantry, are super welcoming and do everything possible to create a great experience for their guests.

When you arrive, it’s hard not to be mesmerized by the tranquil forest and rustic cabins dotted along the shoreline. The owners live onsite with their young children and two dogs, which means they are available if anything comes up during your stay.

Each of the 16 cabins is unique and all are dog-friendly! Some cabins are right on the water, while others are set back a bit from the shoreline with beautiful views of the lake from their private deck.

The cabins have rustic but updated interior furnishings and all are dog-friendly.

The cabins are rustic with updated furniture and interiors, including a full kitchen, pots and pans, silverware, towels, and linens among other essentials. In addition, most have a fireplace, private outdoor fire pit, and gas grill.

White Eagle Resort can accommodate large groups and families with cabins that sleep from 4 to 14 people  comfortably! Everyone can have the space they need with plenty of bathrooms. Some cabins have their own laundry and those that don’t can use the laundry machines in the newly renovated game room at no charge.

There are 3 offsite properties nearby, one of which is on an island. The two mainland lodges are large with 6 and 7 bedrooms. All of these offsite properties have private beaches and access to the resort amenities during their stay!

There are several docks for guests to use at White Eagle Resort.

In addition to the cabins, the resort has tons of complimentary amenities including 2 saunas, an incredible gameroom, kayaks, paddleboards, canoes, life jackets, live bait, sand volleyball, a beautiful sand beach, water trampoline and a hiking trail!

Guests can add on experiences such as a fishing or pontoon boat rental, jet ski rental, local fishing guides, firewood and more. Don’t feel like cooking on vacation? Ask about their catering options!

What I Love About White Eagle Resort

Guests at White Eagle Resort have complimentary use of fishing nets, paddleboards, and much more gear!

The cabins are just part of the White Eagle experience! Here are some of the things I love about White Eagle Resort:

  • Peaceful setting with beautiful views of Lake Vermilion
  • Updated and well-stocked kitchen
  • Gas grill
  • Pet-friendly
  • Sauna
  • Onsite hiking trail
  • Private fire pit at each cabin (and assistance to start the fire!)
  • Free use of kayaks, paddleboards and canoes (including life jackets)
  • Beautiful sand beach with lounge chairs
  • Game room (perfect for rainy days)
  • Boat house stocked with live bait and fishing nets
  • Private boat launch in addition to boat rentals*
  • Reliable wifi available if you want to work remotely or be connected during your stay

* The boat rental fleet is pristine. I’ve been around boats my entire life and was very impressed with how clean and well maintained they keep their fishing boats and pontoons. They have the only pontoon with a slide on it on Lake Vermilion!

The game room at White Eagle Resort is perfect for a rainy day or a break from the sun.

I stayed in the Hummingbird cabin, which is a four bedroom and four bathroom cabin that sleeps 12 people (or more). I enjoyed this cabin’s central location on the property, close to the sauna and boat house with a great view of the lake from the deck. The Hummingbird has a bar area in the lower level as well as laundry. The lower level walks out to a private fire pit.

What I Don’t Love About White Eagle Resort

There’s little not to love about White Eagle Resort but there are a few things to keep in mind before booking your stay.

First, the cabins are all different sizes but are designed for families or groups. The smallest cabins are two bedrooms. So, if you are looking for a solo or two-person getaway this may be more than you are looking for or a good excuse to invite a friend or two along for the stay!

Second, the property and all of the cabins are dog-friendly. Personally, I love this but it may not be for everyone. The owners have two very friendly dogs who roam the property and may come to greet you on your patio or while you’re exploring. If you have a reactive dog or don’t do well around dogs, I would contact the owners to discuss the situation.

Third, while the property feels very private, individual cabins are not particularly secluded. The trails that go throughout the property weave between cabins and along much of the shoreline. So, you will come across other guests regularly. For me, this is part of the fun of staying at a cabin resort, but if you prefer more privacy consider booking one of the cabins on either end of the property or on the island.

Fourth, there are limited restaurant options nearby so it’s best to plan to prepare meals at your cabin. All cabins have a kitchen with all the essentials and a gas grill. Also, catering options are available!

Is White Eagle Resort one of the Best Resorts on Lake Vermilion?

There’s a reason White Eagle Resort has 5-stars on Google. It’s not just a cabin rental, it’s a resort experience for the whole family (including well-behaved pets). The owners shared that they have families that come year after year and I can see why. That being said, a stay at White Eagle Resort is not in everyone’s budget but if it is, I strongly recommend it as one of the best resorts on Lake Vermilion!

Yes, but for a daily or weekly fee, depending on the length of your stay. Guests are asked to clean up after their pets, inside and out, and not leave dogs unattended.

I visited at the end of summer when the nights were getting cooler, so the fire pit was perfect in the evenings. Sounds like you’d enjoy a stay at White Eagle Resort!

  2. This Big Wild World says:

Thanks, Josy! Hanks was one happy little boi. Love that Archie is an adventure kitty, perfect for you. The website says “pet-friendly” but I would check with the owners before booking to verify that cats are permitted (I think they are but am not positive).

Adirondack chars are popular in Minnesota too! They are good because they durable and can’t easily blow away. You’ll find them at a lot of the lakeside cabins here.

  3. Josy A says:

Oooh this looks gorgeous Susan! I bet Hank was happy to spend some time in those lovely cabins! I wonder if they’d allow us to bring Archie (we took him to a couple of cabins here and he loved it – he’s turning into such an adventure kitty!)

p.s. Are those chairs popular in Minnesota too? I feel like they are obligatory at cabins, and in national/provincial parks here in Canada!

  4. Sharyn says:

I love the fireplace – that is such an attraction for me when staying in places ‘in the wild’! So am very attracted to White Eagle Resort.

  5. This Big Wild World says:

Hope you’re able to experience it! White Eagle Resort is a slice of Minnesota Northwoods magic.

  6. Yasmine says:

I am definitely asking White Eagle Resort to my bucketlist of stays on my next USA trip. This place looks amazing.
