What is a wellness retreat?
A wellness retreat is designed to support your mental, physical and emotional health through guided or supported activities that often involve time spent in nature. Retreats are quite different from a resort, though resorts may have amenities that support your wellness.
Some wellness retreats are self-guided, meaning there are activities occurring and you can choose which to participate in during your stay. Most wellness retreats, however, are guided by facilitators with expertise in the topic or intention of the experience. For example, yoga retreats are a form of wellness retreat and hosted by yoga instructors.
Pro Tip: Eco-retreat is an emerging term that refers to a wellness retreat held in a location that is committed to sustainability both in design and practice.
Best Wellness Retreats in Minnesota & Western Wisconsin
You might be surprised how many great wellness retreats in Minnesota and western Wisconsin there are to choose from! Here are my recommendations.
1 | Wild Rice Retreat, Bayfield, Wisconsin

Recently named the #3 resort in the Midwest by Condé Naste Traveler and among the 13 best US resorts for reconnecting with nature by Travel + Leisure, Wild Rice Retreat is both a wellness retreat and resort destination located on Lake Superior in Bayfield Wisconsin.
The Scandinavian-inspired pods nestled in the woods are the perfect place to rest, recharge and focus on self-care. Healthy nourishing meals are included with your stay and guests can take advantage of the onsite wellness activities on the daily schedule for a self-guided retreat.

If you’d like a true guided retreat, they have those too. Check the schedule on their website to find the perfect retreat experience for you!
Pro Tip: My favorite activities during my stay included the sauna, forest bathing, yoga and a sound bath.
While you’re there, spend a half day kayaking the Apostle Islands!
2 | Journey Inn, Maiden Rock, Wisconsin

This eco-retreat bed & breakfast is just 1 hour from the Twin Cities in Maiden Rock Wisconsin, part of the iconic Driftless Region. The Journey Inn has four newly renovated and nature-inspired bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, in the bed & breakfast. Guests have access to hiking and cross-country skiing trails, a garden, wood burning stove, sauna, library, and outdoor hammocks (in summer). Splurge on a rejuvenating session in the Japanese soaking tub, a magnesium foot soak, or yoga class.

Beyond the more self-guided amenities, Journey Inn also hosts group retreats. Find upcoming retreats on their website or Instagram.
